4400 W. 16th St., Indianapolis IN 46222; Tel. 317.484.6572
This four-and-half-star caliber Indianapolis golf course is built on the grounds of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, hence the moniker. The Pete Dye design opened to the public in 1993 and the course plays 6,994 yards form the tips while four of the holes are actually inside the track. Green fees are steep, in the $90 range, but how often to get to tee off with Indy cars flying past the tee at 270 mph?

Coffin Golf Club
2401 Cold Springs Rd., Indianapolis IN 46222; Tel. 317.327.7845
This top municipal golf course in downtown Indianapolis is aptly named. The fairways are tight, and every tee-shot is walled in by trees and water, inspiring claustrophobia in golfers of all skill levels. Completely refurbished in the early '90s by Pete Dye protege William Diddel, the Indianapolis golf course is considered a steal with green fees in the $20-$30 range.

The Pines course opened in 1974 and plays 6,976 yards form the tips. The Sycamore course opened in 2001, and after a few more years of maturing should become the premier track at Eagle Creek, if itís not already gained that recognition. Both courses are a bargain at $20-$30.

The Fort is a Pete Dye/Tim Liddy collaboration, and it plays a staunch 7,144 yards form the gold tees. Conditions are described as 'perfect' at The Fort, yet 18 holes cost less than $50.

The Links at Heartland Crossing
6701 S. Heartland Blvd., Camby IN 46113; Tel. 317.630.1785
This open, links style four-star course is about 5 miles outside Indianapolis. Designed by PGA great Nick Price and architect Steve Stymers, The Links features plenty of fescue and enormous bunkers. Reviews warn of the course being too long and too hard for a novice golfer, but various tee placements could change that. It is an intimidating 7,267 yards from the back tees. Green fees are a bargain in the $30-$50 range.
